Strange Darling (2024), 10/10/2024

A well-done, twisty story. I enjoyed the nonlinear narrative presentation, the story was well-written (although I could see the main twist within the first scene), and the two leads did excellent work.

Nosferatu (1922) x Radiohead (2024), 10/11/2024

Watched this at a 10pm screening, so was fighting head-nods for the back half. A cool concept that mostly worked, although I could have done without the additional (admittedly minor) occasional visual overlays.

The Lighthouse (2019), 10/12/2024

I have yet to see a Robert Eggers movie that I’ve disliked, and this is no exception. I particularly liked the claustrophobic narrative and camera focus on Pattinson and Dafoe (neatly echoing The VVitch’s (2015) similar focus on a small isolated group occupying a small area in the uncaring face of nature. Definitely looking forward to Nosferatu (2024).

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), 10/12/2024

Much to continue to unpack. A difficult watch as expected, but very worth experiencing and analyzing. Perhaps not optimal to watch this for the first time a couple of years after watching The Return; planning to go back and watch through the original show, this movie, and the return show in consecutive order.

Deadpool and Wolverine (2024), 10/13/2024

Blatant fan service, generally a good time. Honestly mostly here for the few scenes of Logan and Laura interacting again (both actors brought a great emotional weight that was markedly absent elsewhere in the movie. The Marvel machine clunks, clatters, and chugs ever onward. Good that the actors are getting paid, wishing all of the effects workers and other ancillary groups successful unionization efforts.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), 10/13/2024

Outstanding! The slow, creeping sense of dread; the feeling of implacable, uncaring nature from all of the shots of the rock; the eeriness of the ascent; the HATS; the tension between “civilization” and nature broadly.
